100 Watt, Anti-Bullying, and Youth Mental Health: seeking support

A group of 10 youth sit on beige coloured stairs and look at the camera. They are dressed in casual clothing. There are glass windows on one side.

In a little over a month (June 12 – 22 2025), 100 Watt Productions bring their production of DNA by Dennis Kelly to Ottawa Fringe audiences. In order to do this, we’re fundraising to help cover our production costs, and given the play’s content about the impact of bullying, the 100 Watt Youth Ensemble and I pledge to give part of our fundraising to Kids Help Phone, Canada’s 24/7, multi-lingual, free mental health service for young people to Feel Out Loud whenever they need it most.

So why DNA? The 100 Watt Youth Ensemble and I see this play as a contemporary cautionary tale, and very funny at times! Its characters are 10 youth, each living within a similar climate: insidious fear. At its most basic plot level, it’s about a group of teens caught in a situation that gets out of control. Like most humans (no matter the age) choices lead to more choices, and each character tries to balance their needs as an individual with that of the group and the greater society. The play asks, “How far would you go to belong?”
